Samsung Electronics Appoints AI Experts for Research Boost

A South Korean multinational electronics company, Samsung Electronics recently appointed two experts in Artificial Intelligence in the move to strengthen its AI capabilities. Dr. H Sebastian Seung and Dr. Daniel D Lee are the two new faces to join the company.

The company said, “The two will work at Samsung Research, the South Korean tech giant’s research arm, and play a central role in building up fundamental research on AI.”

Previously, Dr. Daniel D Lee was the UPS Foundation chair professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. H Sebastian Seung was the professor in the Neuroscience Institute and Department of Computer Science at Princeton University.

Both Seung and Lee anticipating to play a significant role in building up fundamental research on AI at the R&D hub. Before joining Princeton University in 2014, Computational neuroscientist Seung worked as a researcher at Bell Labs.

Seung said, “Samsung is a company with a long history of pursuing innovation, and is committed to tapping the full potential of artificial intelligence.” Further, he added, “I look forward to working with Samsung to help discover what lies ahead in AI.”

Lee is expert in robotic systems and Seung recognized for his work related to machines. Both jointly developed algorithms for machine learning by nonnegative matrix factorization.

Lee said that he eagerly wants to join Samsung Research to develop next-generation technologies for Samsung Electronics. Further, he said that the key factor to fulfill the AI promise is Fundamental research and understanding of machine learning as well as robotic systems.
