On Wednesday 21st March 2018, Rita Owens, Queen Latifah’s mother died after struggling with a heart condition for more than a decade. The musician and actress unveiled her mother death news on Wednesday night to People magazine, but the statement does not include mother’s age and information about where the death occurred.
Queen Latifah said, “It is with a heavy heart that I share the news, my mother, Rita Owens passed away today.” Further, she added, “Anyone that has ever met her knows what a bright light she was on this earth. She was gentle but strong, sweet, but sassy, world but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life.”
In 2004, Latifah’s mother diagnosed with heart trouble but Latifah was shocked when she found about her mother’s health issue. Owens in her 50s when she was diagnosed. Latifah said that her battle is now over after so many years of struggle.
Latifah said, “I am heartbroken, but I know she is at peace. Thank you for kindness, support as well as respect for our privacy at this time.”
In a 2015 element with People magazine, Latifah and Owens discussed how the Owens lived with her sickness. Owens, an educator, was determined to have a heart condition in the wake of blacking out in her classroom.
Latifah says, “My mom is stronger than anyone I’ve ever known. Growing up when life got hard, her strength helped pull us through. Even after her heart failure diagnosis, she remains stronger than ever.”
